The birth of a child is a precious and joyous time for parents however those early years are often associated with illnesses such as digestive upset, eczema and asthma as their immune systems are developing. At Integrated Wellness, we take a thorough and in-depth case history to identify the underlying cause of the presenting symptoms and create a tailored and individual treatment plan to suit your child. Parents and Carers bring their little ones to us for many reasons. Below are only the most common complaints. Eczema is an inflammatory skin condition that is thought to be caused by an overreaction of the immune system to environmental stimulants or reactions to food. The skin becomes red and inflamed, and with constant scratching, the skin becomes more prone to secondary infections. Typical conventional medicine aims to suppress the immune response by the application of steroid creams, thereby alleviating the symptoms. This is only usually a temporary solution, and the symptoms often return after the cessation of the cream. We take an in-depth look at your child’s diet (and the mother’s if breastfeeding) to identify what foods might be contributing. We offer functional testing in areas of allergy and intolerance, which assists our experienced staff in targeting a treatment plan for your child. Digestive upsets are very common in childhood, and if your infant/child is struggling with diarrhoea, constipation or colic, you are not alone. Again, identifying and treating the underlying cause is our focus at Integrated Wellness Clinic. Did you know:
70% of your immune system is in your gut.
Many skin complaints in this age group stem from the gut.
Your health, medications taken, lifestyle and diet significantly influence your microbiome (bacterias of the body) in the first few years of life, and this can influence your health as an adult.
The gut is an incredible organ! These reasons alone make it all so important to correct digestive upset. Not the mention the essential function of nutrient absorption for our overall health. Diarrhoea can come from many origins, such as viral (rotavirus), bacterial infections (salmonella/ E.coli), food allergy or intolerance, parasitic infestation, dysbiosis (imbalance in gut bacteria or yeasts) or celiac disease, to name a few. Pathogenic infections, such as rotavirus and salmonella, need to be initially dealt with by a medical doctor. However, post-treatment, it is important to work at re-colonising good bacteria. Comprehensive digestive stool analysis is just one of the functional tests that may help to target an effective treatment for your infant/child. If your child is experiencing diarrhoea (or vomiting) make sure that you are keeping them well hydrated. As babies and children become dehydrated quickly, please seek medical attention if diarrhoea/vomiting is present. We frequently find that little ones at this age with digestive upset may have some form of food sensitivities. There is simple pathology testing that can be done to identify both true allergies and sensitivities. Constipation can result from inadequate fibre consumption or water intake, food allergies or intolerances, gastrointestinal bacterial imbalance (dysbiosis or leaky gut) or could be associated with stress causing gastrointestinal motility issues. Dietary and lifestyle analysis, stool testing, assessment of digestive enzymes and allergy or sensitivity testing may be necessary to identify the underlying cause and for our team to develop an individual treatment plan for your precious one.
