Many people experience the occasional upsetting out-of-the-blue thought, or double-check something they know they have already done, like going back to make sure the car is locked.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) occurs when these types of thoughts or behaviours happen repeatedly and frequently, to the point where they interfere with a person’s day-to-day life. Almost 3 percent of Australians experience a form of OCD at some stage of their life. OCD can affect children, adolescents and adults.
The condition is characterised by either or both obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions are recurring and persistent thoughts, images or impulses, which are often distressing. Compulsions are certain behaviours, rituals or mental acts that are carried out repeatedly.
Some people experience both obsessions and compulsions, while others may experience just one or the other. Either way, the symptoms of OCD can be exhausting, time-consuming and upsetting for the person.
For some people, the onset of OCD may be triggered by a major life event such as the loss of a loved one, the birth of a child, or a relationship breakdown. For others, OCD can develop gradually with no particular trigger.
